Two-Handed Circular Shoulder Fanning

AREA: Shoulder area.

HAND PARTS: Knuckle nooks, thenar eminence, finger pads, fingertips, four fingers, palms open or closed.

HAND POSITIONS: Horizontal, vertical.

MOTIONS: Circling, gliding.

SPEEDS: Slow-mo, leisurely, fast ’n’ frisky.

PRESSURES: Light, mild, deep.

MOODS: Gentle and relaxed, playful, frolicky fun.

TECHNIQUE:

Pick one hand part from the list. Start slow-mo to feel contours of the shoulder area. Massage a clockwise circle along one shoulder. Make small dime-sized ones, barely moving your hand at all. Then go larger until the circle covers the perimeter of the scapula. Repeat circles about six times. In this technique, when you are using the smallest circles, your motion will cover so little area that it may feel almost like a vibration. Vive la différence!

VARIATION:

Work with counterclockwise circles and notice how counterclockwise feels. Vary your speeds. Does your dog enjoy a leisurely speed or life in the faster lane with fast ’n’ frisky?

VARIATION:

Coordinate this technique with two hands. For a new twist, start with both hands at the top part of the shoulder. Glide your hands around simultaneously, then alternate—have one hand at the top while the other is at the bottom. Then alternate again—go counterclockwise.
